Frank Cortan (Guest Speaker)- spoke about the global warming and how science doesnt prove anything but it sugguests with theories and statics. Everyone seems to know its happening but wont agree with the fact that it mostly because of human activity.
The melting of the white polar caps are important now as they will be in the future because if not managed better its just going to cut down on live sources, release of green house gases, and bad for wild life. The list goes on and on that science cant prove it but it suggests with enough statics to say something to the public.
I believe their needs to be more awareness, better access to education, and maybe information packets gave out to suggest what one individual could to live more sustainable. More given exmaples of what could be done would help. I think creating a list for people and giving the facts out to the people. I also think it would be good to create better programs with the lastely facts, problems, and solutions.
I enjoyed the video and speech. Knowledge is power and change is the attempt to make that difference, so never give up.

Jane Haproff (Guest Speaker)
Jane Haproff (Guest Speaker)- Jane was my favorite speaker but i think it has something to do with her topic. She talked about religion and depending on the background that one comes from shapes their perspective of life and how they live it. Sense im a christian this became the most important speech to me because of this shared faith. I truly believe that being attacted to a religion giving direction and purpose to one's life gives a sense of responsibility to preserve and conserve nature.
She began talking about what life would be like with out laws and order to live by. She defined the word, " chaos," by making a point of how it would be if we didnt have laws.
She talked about the fact the usa was founded on religion and how their had to be order to live.
the perfect example was the ten commdments.
She defined all the reglions because some of their concepts do differ from one another. I was very interested in hearing about my religion (Christianity) because she stated that the religion takes all the good concepts from every religion in one. It was nice to hear and i completely agree that their are good concepts to most of the religions.

Kate Hayes (Guest Speaker)
Kate Hayes (Guest Speaker)- I liked Kate's interesting topic on Affluenza. The word to me defines the United States to the "T." USA is almost as fast of growing in this area as China and Japan is. Affluenza turns citizens into comsumers. For Example, It influences if product is a year or two old its out dated that "you," that its time to up grade and buy a new one. Like cell phones these days people seems to have for maybe 5 months to a year old and start to feel if they should get a new one. Im kinda of guilty in this area because i seem to be apart of the process working for a cell company. My job is to talk people into upgrading to a new cell phone even when it could go alittle longer with the same phone. I have to keep my job but im also for the environment as well.
I just love all the guest speaker that have brought awareness to the classroom for a greater impact on the enviromnent by living sustainability than just depelting and destroying those concepts all Americans seem to know how to do very well. I think this class should be offer in grade school as well as high school, by doing this will get kids educated on this subject at a younger age and more equipt to make a different.

Joe Medeiros (Guest Speaker)
Joe Medeiros (Guest Speaker)- I loved the talk that Joe Medeiros spoke on. He spoke about living a more sustainability. That the true goal of sustainability is meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
What keep me thinking over and over in my head is when he said the united states uses 25% of the world resources. That means to me that the united states birth rates matter more than the people in 3-world countries because the usa does more depleting and destruction.
It got me thinking on every little thing do and could improve on to cut down on my wasting. I need to recyle as much as possible and reuse items until they cant be used anymore. Im starting to change some of my wastful behaviors. One thing im going to start doing is spend alittle more money on items that last twice as long as the cheaper product.
I just really enjoyed all the points made by Joe because it got you to think about the things Americans take advantage of and dont realize.

Vernon Martin guest speaker
Vernon Martin (Guest Speaker)- Vernon had an interesting speech that he gave on facts and the meaning behind items/concepts. He first took out the dollar bill and asked the students what it was. The fact is that it is ink on paper. The meaning or value of it is the "means of exchange." which is holds value in our culture. He made me think of how there is facts that have attacted meaning behind it.
He also explained how malls incorprate nature by creating a sense of nature (experience). For example, the window make u feel like your outside, decorations are set up to give a look of outside, which gives that feeling of being outside. This Marketing strategy gives the experience giving the shoper a calm and relax state of mind.
Its also a weird concept to think that people by nature when it should be free right? I like how he brought up different concepts that we never seem to think about. Overall interesting speech to think about.

2 reply march 15, 2009 reply to (joe) group black footed farrets
I agree with Joe when he has stated on biodiversity how truly important it is. I never have considered or even knew how biodiversity plays a role in our human survival. It was very interest to hear that humans survival is based 100% percent on species. For example, if one takes out livestock a huge food source would be gone and simply would crush humanity survival rate. I also found it interesting was people try to help an issue from (over use) or (miss use) on a certain species and try to fix the problem by (selectively) breed or produced a certain type of species with (most) certain traits;however biodiversity helps with many things not only the survival gene pool, but variety of species helps fight deceases and bigger chance of survival. I love this class because it opens the door to many different avenues and communicates one individual can make an impact.
group reply ( matt) in my group (Black-footed-farrets)
I agree with Matt's statement when he mentioned how lively Lynn Medeiro's was in speaking. As a communications major i really focus in on how a speech is performed, how passionate the person is, how knowledgeable he or she is on topic and look at their sources of information. I thought Lynn Medeiros really keep the attention of her audience. She also keep the students mind's thinking about her conception and challenge the thinking process. I also agree with Matt when he mentioned Fallacies;however for me it was the first time hearing and learning what they are and how to watch out for these fallacies. Even though i did not agree with all of what Lynn said ; however Her speech was a real eye opener.

Guest Speaker: Lynn Medeiros
The guest speaker Lynn medeiros presented an interest speech. I thought her talk was appealing because she went into detail about how an opinion is an uneducated guess and how facts are something not made up. She also told us how to choose a good argument from a bad one. These facts will help us all later on in life such as polical offilications, religious groups, and soical clubs. That a good argument will have well-delveloped anwsers that derive from eduacation. Education is about taking in the new infomation and throwing out the bad and infomation that doesnt seem to line up. I think that education could be the real back bone from which good decisions or the right decisions are made.
On the other hand i did not agree with her when it came to conviction doesnt make the choice right or not. Im a christian and this information doesnt line up with my briefs, so for me to hear this i was already put this part of her speech down.
In another light i did appreciate the part of her speech where she explained how one should not mix matter of value with matters of fact. A great example would be policitics, where both seem to mix then the country and state have to vote an moral issues rather than simply laws in which to run our country.
Overall it was a interesting and fact related speech. I will discern some of the information to help me in the future in my discision making process. Thanks to our guest speaker Lynn Medeiros.

My shaped perspective on the environment
My mom seems to have had a large impact on my perspective of the environment. I grew up in a less fortunate, low incomer family. For this reason, I had less expectations and learned ways of how to save and conserve. For example, my mother ingrained in me how to make the most out of what one has and how to reuse resources to cut wasteful habits. For instance, to recycle all paper, glass, and plastic. The extra money from recycling would go to a bill or to buy food for the house. Growing up in these circumstances gave me a deeper emotional appreciation of the environment and taught me how to be conservative with my habits. I truly believe what tends to shape ones life and how they view the environment would really consist of a couple factors: economic status, who is influential in their life, location of where one lives, religion, political affiliation and any social or culture groups associated with the person.
